Bearcats battle for overtime victory in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Dec. 29) – Hannah Carroll scored a career-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds as Saint Vincent defeated Carthage 67-60 in overtime at the D3hoops.com Classic, hosted by South Point Casino in Las Vegas.

The victory pushed Saint Vincent to 5-4 overall, while Carthage dropped to 4-7.

Saint Vincent opened the scoring as Babette Sanmartin knocked down a jumper, giving the Bearcats a 2-0 advantage. After Carthage answered with a basket of its own, SVC rattled off five straight points as Mara Benvenuti knocked down a jumper and Carroll connected on a three-pointer to push the lead to 7-2.

Carthage responded with the next six points, taking their first lead of the game at 8-7. The teams exchanged three pointers before Jasmine Weems drained another from behind the arc, helping SVC regain the lead at 13-11.

The Lady Reds scored the next four points before Benvenuti tied the contest (15-15) on an assist from Carroll. Carthage then outscored Saint Vincent 5-0 over the final 1:52 of the first quarter, taking a 20-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Carroll opened the second quarter scoring with a jumper just 10 seconds into the period, cutting the deficit to 20-17. Both teams went cold, as neither team scored a point over the next three plus minutes. After the Lady Reds converted a three-point play, Carroll buried another trey, cutting the Carthage lead to 23-20 at the 5:35 mark.

Carthage then knocked down back-to-back threes, taking its largest lead of the first half, at 29-20 with 4:36 to play in the quarter. SVC cut into the deficit as Carroll made a layup and Maria Morgan beat the first half buzzer with a long distance three-pointer.

The Lady Reds held a 29-25 advantage at the break, as both teams were held under 40 percent shooting over the first 20 minutes.

Saint Vincent saw the deficit go back to as many as six points as Carthage hit a three-pointer, making it 35-29. However, SVC worked its way back late in the third quarter.

Trailing 42-36, SVC used an 11-0 run to take a 48-42 lead. Morgan hit a three-pointer and Benvenuti added five points during the Bearcats' run. The lead was the first for SVC since 13-11 in the first quarter.

Susie Ellis made a layup to give SVC a 50-43 lead with 7:29 to play. However, Carthage then went on a 9-0 run to regain the lead at 52-50. The run included the first made field goal for the Lady Reds in nearly eight minutes.

A layup by Sanmartin stopped the run and tied the game at 52-52 with 2:07 to play. Carthage split a pair of free throws to take a one-point lead with 54 seconds left. Ellis then pushed SVC back in front with an old fashioned three-point play, making it 55-53 with 35.2 seconds left.

Two free throws by Carthage made the score 55-55 with 25.4 seconds left. Both teams had possession and failed to score thus forcing an overtime session.

Carthage built a 60-58 lead before Morgan made a layup and added a free throw, giving SVC a 61-60 lead with 1:46 to play. Ellis then added a pair of free throws to push the Bearcats edge to 63-60 with a minute remaining.

After forcing a turnover, Carthage tried to call a timeout but they did not have any remaining, thus resulting in a team technical foul. Ellis then made both free throws, making it 65-60 SVC with 26.4 left. Weems added two free throws to close out the scoring at 67-60.

Along with Carroll's double-double, Benvenuti scored 13 points and Sanmartin added 11 points. As a team the Bearcats held a 51-50 edge on the glass. Both teams struggled from the field as SVC shot 31.9 percent and Carthage converted just 29.9 percent. SVC shot 75 percent from the free throw line, including 7 for 7 in overtime.

SVC faces La Verne (Calif.) at the D3hoops.com Classic on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
