Tigers keep rolling with four straight win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Dec. 19, 2015) – The Sewanee women's basketball team kept rolling Saturday with a 79-56 win over MacMurray at the Bancorp South Holiday Classic on the campus of Rhodes College.

Sewanee is now 8-3 overall. This season marks the first since the 2004-05 campaign that the Tigers have won eight games prior to the end of December. Sewanee has now won four straight games and has victories in six of its past seven contests.

Sewanee quickly jumped out in front of MacMurray with a 9-2 run to open the game. After a layup by Bella Taylor, junior Savannah Rose hit a three on the next possession. Senior Jamie Chauvin then scored four straight points.

After a MacMurray timeout and a layup by Brianna Markusic, Sewanee answered back with a 12-2 run to go ahead 21-6 with 4:05 left in the first quarter. Eventually, MacMurray cut its deficit to 14, 28-14, after Markusic hit a layup with 1:01 left.

The Tigers took a 39-27 into halftime after cooling off a bit in the second quarter. However, after making only 25 percent of its attempts in the second quarter, Sewanee made 52.6 percent of its shots in the third quarter.

The Tigers extended their advantage to 25 points, 59-34, after Corey Caulder scored her 12th point of the third with a three with 3:11 left. MacMurray chipped away at the Tiger lead over the next two minutes. However, Katie Wayne and Sue Kim sparked a 9-2 run which led to a 65-41 lead heading into the fourth.

Sewanee built its largest lead of the game early in the fourth quarter, 27 points, before MacMurray edged Sewanee by one, 15-14, the final 10 minutes of the game.

Overall, Sewanee continued its hot shooting with a 42.3 field goal percentage. The Tigers also forced 24 turnovers and outrebounded MacMurray by 10, 47-37.

Individually, Caulder led all Tigers with 22 points and eight rebounds. Chauvin and Wayne also finished in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Overall, all but two Tigers had points on Saturday. That included two points by freshman Kelsey Arbuckle who saw action for the first time in her early career.

Markusic led MacMurray and all scorers with a game-high 25 points.

With its non-conference season completed, Sewanee will open Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a 1:00 p.m. (EST) contest t rival Centre on January 3rd.
