Third Quarter Surge Pushes Beavers Over Golden Eagles

The City College of New York women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph (Long Island) 55-44 on Monday evening in Nat Holman Gymnasium.

City (5-3) started the game with the first two points from Liz Durchhalter making two free-throws. The Beavers put up good stops on defense to keep the Golden Eagles (3-6) from making their first basket until the 7:16 mark. The score was tied 4-4 and then the Beavers went on a 4-0 run to take a 8-4 lead. St. Joseph's (Long Island) would not give up easily and took the lead 11-10 at the 1:02 mark. They held onto that lead entering into the second quarter. SJC (LI) led 11-10 after the first quarter.

The second quarter consisted of a lot of back-and-forth action as both teams battled for a solid lead. The Golden Eagles led 20-16 at the 3:47 mark, but City was not far behind. CCNY fought back and took the lead at the 1:55 mark. Taylor Pompilio stole the ball and dished it out to Tiara Brown under the basket as the Beavers went up 21-20. City went into the locker room with the one-point lead.

Brown led with eight points and eight rebounds for the Beavers. The Beavers had six steals in the first half and scored nine points off of St. Joseph's turnovers.

CCNY came into the third quarter on with dominating force. The Beaver took their largest lead of the game of 16 points at the 1:40 mark. City outscored the Golden Eagles 25-13 in the third quarter to take a dramatic lead.

With the lead, the Beaver sat comfortably in the fourth quarter and continued to add points. The Golden Eagles took control again, but was unable to overcome the deficit left after the third quarter. City took the game 55-44.

Brown notched a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Erika Richards added 12 points to the Beavers win. The Beavers had 14 steals in the game to help add to their points.

City faces Yeshiva University on Wednesday, December 16 at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Baruch College.
