Bayamón, Puerto Rico -- With 6-of-6 free throws in the final 28 seconds, No. 12/14 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater extended what was a two-point edge over No. 15/17 University of New England to secure a 55-47 women's basketball victory on Sunday morning (Dec. 20) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez.

The Warhawks remain unbeaten on the year (8-0), while the Nor'easters (5-2) fall for a second time to a nationally-ranked opponent.

UWW utilized an 9-0 spurt over a span of 2:31 late in the 3rd to erase UNE's largest advantage (34-28). Four of those point belonged to Malia Smith, who then dropped in a pair of free throws in the waning moments of the quarter to give the Warhawks a 39-37 edge heading into the closing stanza.

Whitewater led for the entirety of the 4th, although five unanswered points by Big Blue's Alanna Vose cut a six-point gap to one with 2:51 left. Smith bumped the spread to three and a Vose free throw brought it back to two inside the final minute. The Nor'easters fouled and Smith calmly drained a pair at the charity stripe, and following missed jumpers on UNE's next two trips, Brooke Trewyn added four more freebies to seal the decision.

Smith led UWW with 12 points, and Trewyn totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds to help the Warhawks post a significant 57-34 margin on the boards, which included 21 on the offensive glass. Andrea Meinert contributed nine points, six caroms, and three steals.

Vose paced UNE with a game-high 14 points. Lauren Hayden and Sadie DiPierro each went for 11 points and shared the team-high of five rebounds; Hayden also collected six steals.

Neither side shot the ball effectively, with conversion percentages of 30.0 percent (UWW) and 27.6 percent (UNE). The Nor'easters made twice as many treys as did the Warhawks (6-3), while Whitewater was plus-7 at the line in spite of double digit misses (16 for 26).

A slow start for both went back-and-forth, as the 10-8 UNE cushion after the 1st featured five of the game's 12 lead-changes. Big Blue was up nearly all the way in the 2nd, until a late three-pointer by Abbie Reeves slid UWW ahead (24-23), beforeMeghan Gribbin put the Nor'easters up at the midway break with a last-second pull-up jumper from the foul line.
