Bears Outlast Chargers

More news about: Lancaster Bible

The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team's three-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday as the Chargers couldn't maintain a second half lead and lost to Ursinus, 68-63 in Collegeville, Pa. The loss drops the Chargers to 3-2 this season, while the Bears improved to 5-4.

How it Happened: The teams traded buckets for much of the first quarter before Lancaster Bible strung together three straight buckets over a 1:32 span. Senior Aubrey Folger gave the Chargers a 14-8 lead with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter and Lancaster Bible eventually led 16-12 after the opening 10 minutes.

The Chargers maintained their lead through the second quarter and led by as many as seven points after a Katy Stover layup gave the Chargers a 26-19 advantage with 4:39 to play in the half. Ursinus cut its deficit to one, 27-26, with 1:36 to play, but Lancaster Bible responded with five late points capped by Stover's layup with two seconds to play that gave the visitors a 33-28 lead at the break.

Ursinus scored the first six points of the third quarter to grab a 34-33 advantage, but Lancaster Bible quickly responded with a 12-2 run and the Chargers built a 45-36 lead with 3:32 to play. Everyone had their hand in the scoring run as Folger, Shanice Smith , Krissy Pennell and Kirsten Webster each had buckets. After Webster's layup gave the Chargers a nine-point lead, the Bears called timeout and were a different team afterwards.

The Bears closed the final 3:32 on a 14-1 run and completely changed the momentum of the contest. Caroline Shimrock had four points and two rebounds over the scoring run to propel the Bears to a four-point lead after three quarters.

Ursinus would lead by as many as 11 points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Chargers had one more run in them as Folger's jumper with 59 seconds to play cut the Chargers' deficit to four at 65-61. Stover stole the ball on the Bears' next possession, but the Chargers couldn't convert on the other end and Ursinus closed the game out with free throws.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 28-of-62 (45.2 percent) from the floor, but just 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc...Folger finished with a game-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds...Smith added 14 points and 15 rebounds as she pulled down 15 or more rebounds for the third straight contest...Stover finished with 16 points, while Pennell added five points and seven assists...Shimrock led Ursinus with 21 points.

The Coach Says: "I felt like we competed well today, but the turnovers (18 of them for Lancaster Bible) hurt us and we didn't do a very good job of boxing out and allowed them to have too many second chance opportunities," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We need to focus on those things this week as we prepare for our game on Thursday. We still had a chance to win though against a solid team, we just came up a bit short."

Extra! Extra!: This was the first meeting between the two schools...Folger is averaging 22.6 points per game this season and now has 1,658 points in her illustrious career...Already the all-time leading scorer in Lancaster Bible women's basketball history, Folger is now just 322 points from becoming the school's all-time leading scorer...Sam Rempel (1997-01) is the all-time leader with 1,979 points scored...Also nearing a milestone is Smith who is just 160 points from topping the 1,000-point mark for her career.
