Lynchburg Races Past Marlins 74-43

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Lynchburg College outscored Virginia Wesleyan 20-5 in the first quarter and led 38-17 at halftime en route to a 74-43 decision against the Marlins in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday afternoon.

The Marlins shot just 22.5% from the field in the game compared to 46.3% by the Hornets. The Virginia Wesleyan defense did hold the hosts to 1-of-16 shooting (6.3%) from beyond the arc.

Lynchburg took control early in the contest, leading 20-3 through the first 9:50 with the Marlins' lone basket coming from Raya BerkleyJayla Harris made a jumper with two seconds left in the quarter to end the frame trailing 20-5. Virginia Wesleyan cut it to a 12-point deficit in the second quarter, but would get no closer.

Chaney Forbush led Lynchburg (6-2/2-0) with 15 points and nine rebounds while Sammi Goldsmith added 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Charmaine Hairston contributed 14 points off the bench.

Harris finished with 12 points for the Marlins as Kelly Jones ended with nine points and seven rebounds. Naeemah Morris contributed five points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.

Virginia Wesleyan (2-5/0-2) hosts Methodist University Friday at 5:30 p.m.
