Babson Overpowers Mount Holyoke, 116-31, in NEWMAC Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.—Senior Kristen Ferola (Amherst, Mass.) finished with career highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds as visiting Babson College rolled to a 116-31 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon.

Babson, which set a new school record for points in a game, is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Mount Holyoke slips to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Ferola was a perfect 9-of-9 from the floor and also added three assists and three steals for the Beavers. Fellow senior Linnett Graber (Roseland, N.J.) scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, classmate Marissa Cicchetti (Mansfield, Mass.) added a season-high 13 points and a game-high five steals, while junior Taylor Russell (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore Brenna LeGacy(Attleboro, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Senior Jess Coelho (Westport, Conn.), who scored eight points, also matched her career high with eight rebounds, and junior Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.) dished out a game-high five assists for the Green and White.

Senior Genelle Green (Windsor, Conn.) scored 11 points to lead the Lyons, who shot just 24.5 percent (12-of-49) and committed 37 turnovers.

Ferola scored 10 points and recorded three steals in the first quarter as Babson opened up a 30-6 lead. The Green and White held Mount Holyoke to just six field goal attempts in the stanza, while forcing 13 turnovers.

Leading 39-12 midway through the second quarter, the Beavers ripped off a 36-2 run to push their advantage to 75-14 with 4:20 to go in the third period. The Green and White shot 75 percent (27-of-36) from the floor after halftime and scored 62 second-half points.

The Beavers shot 63.6 percent (49-of-77) from the field on the afternoon and outscored the Lyons 78-10 in the paint. Babson also scored 46 points off turnovers and finished with a 48-24 edge on the glass.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the Beavers host Emerson in their home opener, while Mount Holyoke travels to Springfield.

• Babson is 34-7 all-time against Mount Holyoke and has won 13 straight in the series going back to 2008.
• The Beavers, who have topped 100 points twice in their first five games, broke the program's previous single-game record for points (105) set back on January 17, 1998, against Rivier.
