Records Fall In Westfield State Win

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Jill Valley (Mahar/Orange, Mass.) scored 25 points and Westfield State set at least five school records in a 100-74 win over Rivier (NH) College in the consolation game at the Fairfield Inn Tournament at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon.

While the 100 points the Owls scored fell short of a record, Westfield set records with 61 points in the first half, 34 points in a quarter, 14 made three pointers and 36 three-pointers attempted.  Westfield generated a record 98 field goal attempts and forced Rivier into 44 turnovers (a likely record – though one that has not officially recorded).

The game was the third highest combined scoring game in history for Westfield, behind yesterday's 96-93 loss to Coast Guard and a 98-80 win over Bridgewater in 2011.

The Owls have adopted an up-tempo style this season under 12th-year head coach Andrea Bertini.

"I don't think the team thought we really had our best effort yesterday," said Bertini. "They came out with a lot of passion and intensity today, and Jill Valley came out of the gate fast and really set the tempo early."

"As a team we were shooting the ball pretty well, and had a lot of confidence.  We created some havoc defensively and that led to some easier looks in transition, and we also rebounded the ball and were able to get out on the break."

Westfield seized control of the game early, and led 27-17 at the end of the first quarter and 61-28 at halftime.

Valley added seven steals and five rebounds to go with her team-high point total. She was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.

No Westfield State player played more than 17 minutes in the game via the subsistitution rotation and the ability to sit the starters late with a comfortable lead

Freshman Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow/Ludlow, Mass.) came off the bench to add 16 points for Westfield, and Forbasaw Nkamebo (Amherst/Amherst, Mass.) added 10.

"It's a lot of fun to play this way," said Bertini, "but it's probably a nightmare for the stat crew and anyone working the scorer's table."

Rivier was led by 27 points and 12 rebounds from Savannah Butterfield.

Westfield improves to 1-1 on the season, while Rivier drops to 0-2.  The Owls will next host Keene State on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
