Brockport dominates in season opening 72-46 win over Morrisville

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team picked up a commanding win to open the season on Friday over Morrisville State, with a 72-46 victory.

The Golden Eagles improve to 1-0 on the year while the Mustangs fall to 0-1 on the young season.

Brockport was sound all around, outmatching its opponent in several categories, including points in the paint, with a 36-10 margin, points off turnovers with a 19-7 count and fast break points by a 10-3 tally.

After the Mustangs opened the contest with a pair of made free throws, the Golden Eagles answered in the form of a Hannah Rehbaum three to take a 3-2 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish.

The Brockport lead swelled to double digits after another made trey, this time from the hands of Hannah Spencer, to take an 18-8 lead with 3:10 to play in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles recovered from a Morrisville charge to post a 10 point lead at the first break after Faith Welch weaved through the lane to post the final points of the quarter and take a 22-12 lead into the second quarter.

Brockport's offense struggled to produce to begin the second period of play, and saw its lead reduced to four after a pair of Mustang free throws with 2:17 in the period 

The steady play of Olivia Suhr gave head coach Corinne Jones' squad a six-point lead with a made bucket to make the count 29-23. A pair of free throws from the Mustangs to close the half made the count at the break 29-25 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

Brockport took control in the second half, and never looked back. Five minutes into the third period, the Green and Gold unit worked their lead back out to double digits after a Welch three made the count 39-28 with 3:45 to play.

Brockport continued to widen the gap, and by the end of the quarter a Suhr lay-in gave the Green and Gold a 47-32 advantage.

The fourth quarter was all Brockport, as several Golden Eagles helped to seal the deal. An old-fashioned three-point play from Suhr to open the period helped the lead grow to 50-32. Just two minutes later a Spencer jumper took the Brockport lead to 20 at 54-34 

Jones' squad maintained their hold on the contest, and with the help of a six-point run down the stretch, were able to close the contest with a 72-46 win.

Welch led all scorers with 17 points in the outing to go with six rebounds, two assists and four steals. Suhr was not far behind with 16 points and just two rebounds shy of a double-double at eight. The senior also came up with a monster five blocks in the outing. Two other Golden Eagles worked their way into double digits with Rehbaum and Spencer both adding 13 points to the Brockport totals.
