Hope Women's Basketball Knocks Trine Out Of MIAA Tournament Contention

Guard Brittany Berry closed in on a career record as the nationally ranked Hope College women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 68-58 win at Trine on Saturday.

The senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Catholic Central HS), made four 3-pointers at Trine to give her 216 for her career. The school record of 218 belongs to Jordyn Boles (2004-08).

Berry, who has a school-record 72 3-pointers this season, can break the career record on Wednesday when the Flying Dutch host third-seeded Kalamazoo (16-9) in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament semifinals.

Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse. Second-seeded Hope (22-3 overall, 14-2 MIAA), beatKalamazoo 73-64 and 65-52 this season.

The other MIAA semifinal pits fourth-seeded Olivet (14-11) at top-seeded Calvin (25-0) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Winners advances to Saturday's 3 p.m. championship game at the site of the highest remaining seed.

Hope eliminated Trine, which tied for fourth place in the MIAA standings, from playoff contention by scoring the game's first seven points and never trailing. Trine lost a tiebreaker to Olivetbecause Olivet swept the season series.

Senior Rebekah Llorens of Grayslake, Illinois (Grayslake Central HS), led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 from the foul line. She had a career-high 26 in a loss at Calvin on Wednesday.

Berry chipped in 16 points, including two 3s and six points as Hope raced to a 31-15 halftime lead. The 15 points allowed was the second-lowest yielded by the Flying Dutch this season. Hope allowed 12 in the second half of a 54-34 win at Franklin (Indiana) on December 17.

Junior Maura McAfee of Midland, Michigan (Midland HS), recorded her 14th double-double of the season. She collected 14 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. The school record for rebounds in a game is 24 by Anne Mulder during a 1980 game against Olivet.

McAfee raised her rebounding total for the season to 256. It ranks fifth in the Flying Dutch annals. She had 280 last season for third place.

McAfee now has 692 career rebounds, seventh most by a Hope player. She passed Linda Ebels(680 from 2002-06) and Karen Gingras (688 from 1982-86) at Trine.

Hope was tied for 11th in this week's USA Today Sports NCAA Division III coaches poll and ranked 13th by d3hoops.com.
