Spartan Women Fall at No. 11/12 NYU

MANHATTAN – The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team lost at No. 11/12 nationally ranked New York University by a score of 69-52 on Friday at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.

The Spartans drop to 7-14 overall and 1-9 in the University Athletic Association. The Violets improve to 19-2 and remain in second place in the conference at 8-2.

Senior forward Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) and junior post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) each scored 10 for the Spartans, while Mummey posted three blocked shots.

Megan Dawe paced NYU with a game-high 25 points. Kaitlyn Read added 10 points and five rebounds. Overall, the Violets held a 46-20 advantage in points in the paint and a 25-11 edge in points off of turnovers.

Dawe scored 13 of her team's first 21 points, and the Violets led 23-12 after a Melissa Peng jumper at 7:44 of the first half. Following a CWRU bucket from Mummey, the hosts blew the game open with a 13-2 run capped by a Drew Cabral layup with 4:06 left before halftime.

The CWRU deficit reached 16 (40-24) at the break and as many as 17 (47-30) at 16:53 in the second half, but the Spartans staged a mini rally with a 12-4 run that pulled the count to 51-42 as senior point guard Amanda Germer (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scored a layup with 11:24 remaining. However, NYU scored the next eight to put the game away.

The Spartans wrap up the road portion of the 2014-15 schedule at Brandeis University this Sunday, February 15. Tip-off from Red Auerbach Arena in Waltham, Massachusetts is set for 2:00 p.m.
