Geneseo Defeats Fredonia, 76-41

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Shannon McGinnis scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Knights over Fredonia, 76-41, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, Friday night.

Sophomore guard Katie Durand added 14 points while senior guard Biz Reinhardt was credited with nine points, seven rebounds and five assists in the victory.

"The team came out of the locker room committed to defending at a high level and ultimately that was the key to tonight's outcome," said head coach Scott Hemer. "We shot better than we have as of late but going forward if we can combine both consistently, we should be in good shape. We had great leadership and effort across the board tonight and played better as a result of that. The kind of leadership and effort we had tonight can take us a long way."

Ahead 7-6 with 13:31 on the clock, Geneseo went on a 18-3 run over the next eight minutes to take a 25-9 lead at 5:23. The run was capped by a three-point play from Reinhardt.

A lay-up from Durand and two free throws from senior forward Lea Sobieraski put the Knights up, 31-14, with just over a minute to play as the team would take an 18-point lead into halftime, 34-16. Sobieraski finished with eight points on the night.

Geneseo put the game out of reach in the second half. With 17:18 remaining, McGinnis made a shot from beyond the arc to put the Knights up, 41-16. Just over six minutes later, junior forwardAllison McKenna hit a jumper to put the team up by 30, 54-24. McKenna was credited with six points and six rebounds in the win.

With 6:46 left to play, Sobieraski made a lay-up to give Geneseo its largest lead of the night, 63-28, as the team finished the game with a 41-28 rebounding advantage and a 50.8 field-goal percentage, including 70 percent from long range.

The Knights play another home game tomorrow against Buffalo State at 4 p.m. before hitting the road to face Cortland on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
