Berry upends Panthers, 74-59

ROME, Ga. - - Led by Chanlir Segarra's 16 points, the Berry College women's basketball team defeated Birmingham-Southern College, 74-59, at home on Friday night.

Segarra was 8-17 shooting, passed eight assists, and collected four rebounds in the Berry victory.

The win was the second in a row for the Vikings, and it improved their record to 15-5 overall and 7-2 in the Southern Athletic Association Conference. The loss dropped the Panthers to 9-11 and 2-7.

Scoring 12 of her 14 points in the first half, Mel McLean helped BC to a 37-26 at halftime.

McLean was 4-9 shooting and made four three-point shots. She also collected eight rebounds in the contest.

Two other players scored double digit points for the Vikings: Valerie McLure and Zarriah Pierce.

McLure had her first career double-double on the night, scoring12 points and collecting 11 rebounds in the win. Pierce put up 10 points and was 3-4 shooting. She was also a perfect 2-2 from both the free throw line and from beyond the three-point line.

For the Panthers, Camillia Carter scored 10 points. Carter was 4-5 shooting. She also made one three-point shot for BSC.

Berry shot 43-percent (29-66) to Birmingham-Southern's 31-percent (20-64). The Vikings also grabbed 54 rebounds to the Panthers' 40 rebounds.

"We started out strong playing the way we wanted, by moving the ball and getting everyone involved," said Berry Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "We wanted to stop their drives to the basket, too, and I thought we did a decent job defending tonight."

The Vikes look to pick up their third straight win as they host SAA-leading Millsaps College on Sunday, February 8, at 1 p.m.​
