Brooklyn Downs Hunter, 64-56, for Eighth Straight Win

New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team clipped the Hawks of Hunter College, 64-56, on Friday evening at the Hunter Sportsplex in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action.

With the win, the Bulldogs extend their win streak to eight straight to improve to 16-5 overall on the season and 13-1 in the CUNYAC. Hunter drops to 9-14 overall on the year and 6-8 in conference play.

The first half saw three ties and two lead changes, as Hunter would control the majority of the half. Following a layup from Hunter's Dimitra Thomopoulos that opened the scoring for the game, Brooklyn rattled off six points in a row, four from Megan Campbell, to take a 6-2 lead at the 16:07 mark of the half.

The Hawks would tie the game at six all, before BC regained the lead on a jumper from Vanessa D'Ambrosi to put the visitors up, 8-6, with 14:28 on the clock. From that point forward, the Hawks would surge on an 8-0 run to go up 14-8 with 10:14 left before the halftime buzzer. Hunter would never trail in the half again, as the home team would go up by as many as nine, 22-13 (6:28), before taking a five-point, 26-21, lead into the locker room.

The second half would see the Bulldogs jump out to an 8-2 run to erase its halftime deficit and regain the lead. The teams combined for five lead changes and four ties through the first 10 and a half minutes of the second period.

After a free throw from Hunter's Joey Chan tied the game at 38 all with 9:35 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs would seize control using a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 45-38 lead. Campbell sparked the run scoring five of the seven points.

Brooklyn would never relinquish its lead again and eventually lead by as many as nine, 55-46, on a layup from Nicole Francomano with 2:23 left in the game, before taking home the eight-point win, 64-56.

BC shot 50% (14-for-28) from the field in the second half, including going 2-for-3 from three and shooting 56.5% (13-for-23) from the line to outscore the Hawks 43-30 in the second period and complete its comeback win.

Campbell led the visitors with a team-high 21 points, to go with nine rebounds. Francomano finished with 20 points, while D'Ambrosi added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Points off of turnovers and second chance points were both keys to the Brooklyn win, as the Bulldogs notched 17 points off of 14 Hunter turnovers and scored 20 points on 15 offensive rebounds. BC out-rebounded Hunter 42-34.

For Hunter, Kristen Markoe recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while also dishing out seven assists, all game-highs, coming off the bench. Chan added 16 points and six rebounds, while Thomopoulos finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

For the game, BC shot 40.4% (23-for-57) from the field, but struggled from three, converting just 16.7% (2-for-12) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also struggled from the line, going 16-for-27 (59.3%).

Hunter was held to 36.7% (22-for-60) shooting from the field, including just 11.1% (1-for-9) from three. The Hawks took full advantage of its free throw, going 11-for-13 (84.6%) from the charity stripe.

Brooklyn returns to action this Monday, February 9th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Purchase, NY to take on the Panthers of Purchase College in non-conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
