DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Hiram College women's basketball team shot 52.5 percent from the field to pick up a 81-74 road win at Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.
The Terriers (6-14, 2-9 NCAC) finished 32-of-61 from the field. Hiram also went 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) from the free throw line.
Individually, sophomore Kayla Yost (Norwalk/Perkins) had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and also pulled down six rebounds.
Freshman Mercedes Jones (Dayton/Ponitz Career Technology Center) had 17 points and eight rebounds. She finished 8-of-13 from the field.
Senior Taylor Ratliff (Berea/Columbia) added 14 points and a career-high seven rebounds and senior Kelsey Koskinen (Madison) chipped in with 12 points.
Emily Julius led Ohio Wesleyan (9-11, 5-6) with a game-high 20 points.
A layup by Jones with 2:59 left to play put Hiram in front 73-71.
OWU would respond on its next possession with a 3-pointer to retake the lead, 74-73.
On Hiram's next possession, Jones missed a shot. But Yost was right there to grab the rebound and lay it in, putting the Terriers back on top 75-74.
Hiram would force a turnover on OWU's next possession and Ratliff followed with a basket to make the score 77-74 with 1:13 left in the game.
The Terriers would get another stop two free throws from Yost put the game away.
A three from Yost exactly five minutes into the game gave Hiram an early 13-9 lead.
The remainder of the first half would feature eight ties, before Ratliff drained a 3-pointer in the final minute to give the Terriers a 43-40 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Battling Bishops would take a 51-47 lead. But Hiram answered with seven straight points, to take a 54-51 lead with 14:50 remaining in the game.
The second half was just as tight, featuring eight ties and six lead changes, before Hiram was able to take control in the final minutes for the win.
The Terriers won the rebounding battle 41-34 and saw their bench outscore Ohio Wesleyan's 37-9.
Hiram will play next on Friday, when it hosts Wittenberg at 6 p.m. The Terriers will follow that up with another home contest on Saturday against No. 11-ranked DePauw (Ind.) at 2 p.m.
