New York, N.Y., Jan. 23, 2015 – The No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis basketball team suffered its first loss of the season in a 64-58 defeat at No. 7 New York University in a battle of undefeated teams Friday night at the Coles Sports Center in New York, N.Y.

Washington University shot a season-low 33.3 percent from the field, and hit just 6-of-24 from three-point range.

Washington U. dropped to 14-1, 3-1 in in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while New York remained undefeated at 15-0, 4-0 in the UAA.

Senior forward Alyssa Johanson led the Bears with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, while junior guard Jordan Thompson had eight points off the bench. The Bears were outrebounded for just the second time this season 39-38, but had a 14-9 advantage in second-chance points.

NYU hit four of its first five shots from the field and took an early 10-7 four minutes into the game. A lay-up by senior forward Melissa Gilkeygave Washington U. the 19-18 advantage, but New York answered with 10-straight points to grab a 28-19 lead with 7:42 to play. The bucket for Gilkey was her only two points of the first half.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Read scored the final seven points of the half for New York as the Violets took a 41-31 lead to the locker room. Read led all scorers with 12 points in the half, including a three-pointer from the corner with 1:59 to play.

Biewen and junior guard Jordan Thompson had six points each for Washington U., who shot 36.4 percent (12-of-33) from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Bears hit just 2-of-13 from three-point range, while NYU hit five threes. A combined 19 fouls were called in the first half, and NYU took advantage making 12-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Senior guard Alexandra Keane opened the second half with a three-pointer from the corner, and then Keane found Johanson open for a jumper on the next possession to trim the lead to five (41-36). After a timeout by NYU, the Violets responded with five-straight points to extend the lead to double figures (48-38) with 15:29 left.

Johanson stayed hot with a three-pointer from the wing and a 15-foot jumper to trim the NYU advantage to 49-43. Johanson scored nine-straight points after Keane's three-pointer to start the second half. New York went without a bucket for almost eight minutes, and the Bears got the advantage down to five with on a lay-up by Gilkey with 11:06 to play.

Johanson connected on 2-of-3 free-throws after getting fouled on a three-pointer to make it 56-53 with less than three minutes left. NYU's Melissa Peng hit a step back jumper to make it a five-point game (58-83), and then connected on 3-of-4 free-throws to push the lead to 61-55.

Gilkey canned a three-pointer from the corner with 40.0 seconds remaining to trim the lead to 61-58, but NYU's Megan Dawe scored on a lay-up with 14 seconds left to seal the victory.

Dawe had 15 points to lead New York, while Read added 14 points. Amy Harioka and Peng added 11 points each for NYU, who hit 21-of-29 from the field in the win.

Washington U. wraps up a two-game road swing at Brandeis University on Sunday, Jan. 25. Game time is set for 2 p.m. (ET) in Waltham, Mass.
