Providence, R.I.-Sophomore guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) scored a career-high 25 points, grabbed nine boards, recorded six assists and swiped four steals as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought, 70-53, Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut at The Murray Center on Tuesday evening.

The Colonials (10-5, 2-4 LEC) opened a 13-4 lead when freshman guard Kayla Briere (Wolcott, CT) buried a trifecta 6:38 into the first half. The Anchorwomen (4-11, 3-3 LEC) chipped away and cut the lead down to three, 24-21, on a layup by junior forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) with 4:32 remaining in the stanza.

The Anchorwomen took their first lead of the game, 25-24, when Hill buried a jumper with 1:42 left. Five straight points by sophomore guard Jessica Patalano (Exeter, RI) pushed the RIC lead to six, 30-24, entering halftime.

The Anchorwomen upped their advantage to 10 points, 36-26, when Moore notched a pair of free throws just 3:15 in to the second half. The Colonials cut the lead down to five, 40-35, when sophomore guard Colleen Cosker (East Hartford, CT) notched a layup with 14:23 remaining.

That is as close as Western would get as the Anchorwomen buckled down on defense and ballooned their lead to as much as 22 points, 68-46, on a pair of Moore free throws with 1:54 remaining in the game. The Colonials outscored RIC down the stretch, but it wouldn't be enough as the Anchorwomen earned a 70-53 victory.

Moore scored her career-high on 8-for-11 shooting from the field and 7-for-10 shooting from the charity stripe. Hill scored 14 for RIC, while freshman guard Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, MA) rounded out the Anchorwomen in double figures with 16 points to go along with five steals. The Anchorwomen shot 44.8 percent (26-for-58) from the field, 37.5 percent (3-for-8) from three-point range and 78.9 percent (15-for-19) from the charity stripe for the game.

Cosker finished the game with 13 points, three boards and three assists, while Briere finished with six points and four rebounds for the visitors. Western shot 36.4 percent from the floor (20-for-55) and 56.3 percent from the free throw line (9-for-16), while shooting 30.8 percent (4-for-13) from downtown.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Connecticut College on Thursday, Jan. 22 (7 p.m.).
