MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season by a count of 63-45 versus Allegheny College in the championship game of the 2014 Greg Richards Memorial Tip-Off Tournament at the David V. Wise Center.
The Spartans fall to 1-1 headed into their home opener this coming Tuesday, while the Gators improve to 2-0.
Allegheny held CWRU to just 23.4% shooting from the field and 18.5% from three-point range.
Individually, sophomore guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Senior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Gators placed two in double-digits, Emma Pellicano with a game-high 18 points and Jessica Mrdjenovich with 16.
The Spartans led just once, 18-16, when McCoy scored to cap a 9-0 run at the 5:04 mark of the first half. Allegheny then finished the period on a 9-0 run of its own ending in a Marina Scarantino three-pointer with 37 seconds left before the break. Overall in the first half, CWRU was 0-for-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
In the second, the Gators opened on a 14-5 run and led 39-23 as Kaitlyn Fromknecht scored a layup at 13:18. Allegheny's advantage reached as high as 19, at 51-32, with 6:11 remaining.
For the weekend, senior forward Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) was selected to the all-tournament team with averages of 7.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
The Spartans host cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University on November 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
