Hornet Women Defeat Bridgewater 78-70

BRIDGEWATER, VA – Four Lynchburg College women's basketball players netted 14 points or more Saturday as the Hornets scored a 78-70 victory at Bridgewater College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

LC led 39-35 at the half, and held a 50-43 advantage four minutes into the second stanza. A 9-2 run, fueled by two Olivia DeFrancesco three pointers, extended the lead to 59-45 with just under 13 minutes left on the game clock.

The Eagles fought back to close the score to 74-70 with two minutes to play, but didn't score again as the Hornets forced three turnovers. Junior Sammi Goldsmith was credited with two steals in the final 1:20 of the contest.

Sophomore guard Charmaine Hairston scored a team-high 16 points and added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior Shannon Allan also filled up the stat sheet with 15 points (7-11 shooting), five rebounds, five rebounds and three steals. Freshman Caroline Naumann tied a career-high with 14 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Senior Lauren Penley tallied 14 points and five rebounds and DeFrancesco finished with nine points.

Heather Cantrell paced Bridgewater (6-6/1-3) with a game-high 23 points, hitting 9-of-16 shots and grabbing eight rebounds. Oshene Kelly had 13 points and six rebounds and Cassidy Burkholder contributed 12 points, seven rebounds six assists and three steals.

The Hornets shot 52 percent from the floor (32-61), rebounding from a 29 percent shooting game against Randolph-Macon College Tuesday.

Lynchburg hosts Randolph College Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
