Coleman powers Nor'easters past Bison, 81-48

DUDLEY, Mass. -- Senior Kelly Coleman posted a double-double with game highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds to help the University of New England defeat Nichols College, 81-48, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball game played Saturday afternoon (Jan. 10) at the Nichols Athletic Center.

The Nor'easters remained undefeated in conference play at 4-0 while improving their overall record to 8-2. Nichols is now 4-8 overall (1-5 CCC). UNE has won the last 11 meetings between the two schools and is 16-5 all-time versus the Bison.

Coleman was 9 of 14 from the floor and 5 of 5 at the free throw line en route to her 17th career double-double. JuniorAlanna Vose supported with 20 points, including making 4 of 7 attempts from beyond the arc. First-year Sam MacDonaldcontinued her stellar play with 11 points, and sophomore Alicia Brown contributed 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting. JuniorMeghan Gribbin distributed seven assists for the Nor'easters, who shot a solid 45.5 percent (30 of 66) from the floor. JuniorLauren Hayden contributed seven boards and five steals in the winning effort.

For Nichols, Amber Litwinko led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. Brooke Packard scored 10 points off the bench and Sarah Whitestone tallied 10.

After surrendering the initial two points of the contest, the Nor'easters reeled off 18 straight and never looked back. Their biggest lead (40-15) of the frame came at the 3:19 mark on their way to a 44-20 halftime advantage.

UNE led by as many as 40 (76-36) after halftime before settling for the final margin of 33.

Big Blue limited Nichols to 29.7 percent (19 of 64) accuracy from the floor while leading 50-38 on the glass.

The Nor'easters are back in action Tuesday when they play at Western New England University (5:30 p.m.).
