Marymount Edges York in CAC Tilt on Wednesday

More news about: York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's basketball team surrendered a 65-57 victory to Marymount University on Wednesday night at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

The Spartans (4-8, 0-5 CAC) received another solid performance from their leading scorer senior Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa. / Lansdale Catholic) who matched her career high with 20 points, to go along with a team-high seven boards. Wasssel also led the team from the charity stripe as she went a perfect 6-6.

The first half of play was a competitive back-and-fourth battler that saw the score tied five times and six lead changes. Marymount (8-4, 4-1) held the largest lead of the half, five, which it possessed three times during the first stanza.

A key moment for York to hold Marymount in check was a pair of consecutive three-pointers from freshman Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa. / Susquehannock) with 4:28 to play in the first half. Wagner finished with eight points and two boards.

The Spartans were able to gain a little momentum heading into the locker room as Sarah Shearer (York, Pa. / West York Area) scored a fast-break layup with 12 seconds left in the half and cut the Saint lead to two.

Shearer finished the game with 10 points to go along with four rebounds while going 4-4 at the foul line.

The Spartans used the first-half momentum to go on a 6-2 run through the first three minutes of the second half to take a two-point lead. However, the lead would be York's last of the game as a 12-2 Marymount run right in the middle of the second half gave the Saints a 10-point lead and would prove to be too big of a cushion for the Spartans to overcome.

York finished the game shooting 32.7% from the field and 85.7% (18-21) from the charity stripe. Marymount shot 38.3% from the field, including 42.9% (4-7) from three-point range and 76.2% from the foul line. All of Marymount's three-point attempts came in the first half.

The Spartans will return to the hardwood on Saturday when they travel to Salisbury to face the Sea Gulls in CAC contest starting at 2:00 p.m.
