GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) scored a career-high 18 points and Alexis Briscoe (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) notched her first career double-double to lead Hood College to a 65-58 win over Wilkes in the consolation game of the Gettysburg College Tournament.

Kessler, who was named to the all-tournament team, hit 4-of-8 field goals and 10-of-11 from the free throw line (91 percent), the fifth-best single game free throw percentage in school history. The senior also had four steals in the game.

Briscoe scored 11 points, pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds and added a pair of blocked shots.

Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) was 6-of-8 from the field and finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

As a team, Hood shot a season-high 45 percent from the field.

Hood trailed by one late in the first half, but took a 32-31 lead into the break after a lay up by Briscoe with nine seconds left in the period.

The Blazers trailed 35-34 in the opening minutes of the second half, but a Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) bucket started a 21-8 run. Kessler scored eight points in the run as Hood took a 55-42 lead with 7:50 to play.

A three by Taylor McGaughey (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) kept the Blazer lead in double digits, 59-48 with 5:16 remaining, but the Colonels began to chip away. Chelsea Brown and Elena Stambone combined for all the scoring in a 10-2 run that trimmed Hood's lead to 61-58 with 47 seconds left.

Two defensive plays on consecutive possessions sealed the win. Briscoe blocked a shot with 19 seconds left, and Smith stole the ball on Wilkes' final play.

Stambone had 13 points for the Colonels and Brown added 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Kayla Brahm dished out six assists.

Hood outrebounded Wilkes 42-35 in the contest.

The Blazers will look to stay in the win column with a road trip to Alvernia for a Commonwealth Conference game on January 7 at 6 p.m.
