Hornets Battle with No. 10 Williams, End Trip with 64-57 Loss

SAN JUAN, PR – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team faced its highest-ranked opponent of the season on Sunday and kept the game close through, falling 64-57 to No. 10 Williams College to conclude action in Puerto Rico.

The Hornets led 7-6 in the early going and swapped the lead a total of six times before trailing 34-27 at halftime.

Williams came out hot in the early part of the second half, assuming the largest lead of the game at 45-35 with 15:21 remaining. Lynchburg fought hard to close the gap, getting the game within four points thanks for a 10-4 run.

The game came down to free throws at the end with Williams able to hold onto the narrowest of margins.

Kellie Macdonald led Williams (10-1) with 13 points while Amanni Fernandez and Ellen Cook had 12 and 11 respectively. Kristin Fechtelkotter had nine points and 13 rebounds to lead from the inside.

Olivia DeFrancesco led the Hornets with 15 points while Charmaine Hairston had 10 points and Sammi Goldsmith posted eight points and five assists.

Lynchburg (6-4/2-0) returns to the States to face Randolph-Macon College (7-2/1-1) on January 7 in Turner Gymnasium. Opening tip for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest is set for 7 p.m.
