YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team remained winless in Capital Athletic Conference play as the Mary Washington Eagles registered a 64-47 conference win on Saturday in York.

The Spartans fall to 3-5 overall as they have lost four straight after their 3-1 start to the season. They are now 0-3 in league play. The Eagles improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

The Green and White got off to a good start but that wouldn't last long as the Eagles pushed out to an 11-6 lead just under seven minutes into the game. The Spartans battled back and went on an 11-2 run to forge a 17-13 lead midway through the first half.

Mary Washington pushed back tying the game at 17. The two teams went back and forth over the next four minutes before the Eagles took the lead for good on a bucket by Taylor Barton with 3:34 left in the half. That hoop by Barton kick started an 11-2 run to end the half as UMW took a 32-23 lead to the break.

The Eagles came out of the intermission and locked down the Spartans defensively. Mary Washington opened the second half on a 10-2 run as they pushed their lead to 17 just five minutes into the second stanza.

York cut the lead to 10 three different times but UMW put the game away for good with a quick 5-0 spurt to push the lead back to 15 with five minutes left in regulation. York would not get closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Brianne Comden was fantastic for the Eagles as she tallied a game-high 16 points in 22 minutes of play. Comden was 7-for-10 from the floor and 2-for-5 from the free throw line while she also had two rebounds and two assists. Aubrey Howland and Claire Haeuptle each reached double figures with 10 points while Taylor Barton pulled in a game-high nine rebounds to go with eight points.

The Eagles finished the game shooting 46.2% from the floor including 50% in the second half. UMW was 2-for-10 from three and 14-for-25 (56%) from the free throw line.

Sophomore Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) was the only Spartan to reach double figures as she notched 11 points. Hruz was 3-for-4 from the field including 1-for-1 from three while she went 4-for-8 from the stripe. Hruz added four rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 25 minutes. Junior Julianne Lambert (Hockessin, Del./Padua Academy) played well in her first start of the year as she tallied nine points, five assists, two rebounds, and a steal for YCP.

York shot 29.2% from the floor including 4-for-16 (25%) from three. The Spartans were again cold from the free throw line as they went just 15-for-28 (53.6%).

York was outrebounded 49-30 while the Eagles dominated the play in the paint. Mary Washington held a 40-16 margin in points in the paint.

Both teams were sloppy with the ball as they both had 21 miscues in the game. The turnovers were far more costly to York as the Eagles turned the York mistakes into 23 points while the UMW miscues only cost them 13 points.

The Spartans are set to return to action on Tuesday, December 30 when they play at the Ohio Wesleyan Bishop Classic/Hoops for Hope Tournament. The Green and White will have to face nationally ranked Hope in the opening round of the tournament at 8:00 pm.
