Calvin women's basketball routs Finlandia 88-50

The Calvin women's basketball used a dominating second half to run away with an 88-50 victory over visiting Finlandia University Saturday afternoon inside Calvin's Van Noord Arena.

Ranked 23rd in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, the Knights are now 5-0 on the year.

Calvin shot 54.5 percent from the field in the second half and outscored the visiting Lions 52-23 in the second half.

Finlandia (1-4) hung around in the first half as the Knights led 36-27 at halftime.

Calvin scored the first nine points of the second half however to build a 45-27 advantage and never looked back from that point to roll to the win.

Calvin was led in the win by senior Breanna Verkaik who popped in 17 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore Anna Timmer dropped in 10 points off the bench while seniors Hannah Acre and Kayla Engelhard and junior Natalie Kmet had nine points each.

Calvin held a 38-33 rebounding advantage. Finlandia turned the ball over 22 times.

Finlandia was led in scoring by Brooke Turin and Brierra Ruska-Pasanen with 10 points apiece.

Calvin will now break until next Saturday when it hosts Albion in its MIAA opener at 3 p.m.
