Dumas Scores 21 to Lead Cortland Past St. Lawrence, 67-57

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Cortland improved to 3-0 with a 67-57 non-league victory over visiting St. Lawrence.

Dumas made 9-of-20 shots from the floor and also pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds for her second double-double in three games. Senior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) hit 7-of-10 shots and finished with 16 points and six rebounds and sophomore Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) made 3-of-4 3-pointers in a 13-point effort.

Also for Cortland, senior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) registered four assists, five rebounds and five points and senior Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) scored six points on 2-of-3 shooting from the 3-point arc.

St. Lawrence (2-1) was led by Allison Cady and Lauren Quattrocchi with 14 points each. Quattrochi also paced the Saints with seven assists and three steals and Cady pulled down seven rebounds. Kara McDuffee added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds and Caroline Dalton totaled nine points and eight rebounds.

St. Lawrence held its largest lead at 29-18 after a Cady layup with 5:27 left in the first half. Cortland chipped away at the deficit and eventually pulled to within two at 34-32 when Chapko hit a 3-pointer to beat the first-half buzzer.

The Red Dragons opened the second half on a 13-4 run that featured back-to-back Rando treys. Wolstenholme's layup ended the streak and put Cortland up 45-38. The Saints, however, fought back and grabbed a 51-50 lead with 10:04 left after seven straight points by Dalton.

Leading 58-56 with less than six minutes left, Cortland used Dumas layups at the 5:29 and 4:47 marks to go up by six. Quatrocchi made a free throw with 3:54 left to make it a 5-point game, but Cortland held the Saints off the scoreboard the rest of the contest.

Cortland shot 44 percent from the field and 50 percent (7-of-14) from the 3-point arc. St. Lawrence shot 44 percent in the first half but hit on only 24 percent of its second-half attempts.

Cortland will travel to William Smith on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. non-league game.
