ROME, Ga. -- Chanlir Segarra had 18 points, five assists, four steals and two rebounds for Berry, but the Vikings fell to Covenant College, 72-60, in its season-opener.
In the first half, Covenant then went on an 8-0 run which caused Berry to take a timeout. The Scots continued to thrive in the first half even leading the Vikings 22-13, but the Vikings closed the half up by one, 31-30.
During that first half, Viking Emma Cook provided the team with some spark, going 4 for 6 from the field and adding two rebounds. She had a total of 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists on the night.
For the Scots, Jessie Blankenship went 4 for 8 in the first half along with seven rebounds.
The second half was more of the same for both teams as Covenant quickly took back the lead, going on a 10-0 run; the score was 50-41.
Free throws were an issue for Berry only making 43.3% of their attempts while the Scots made 84.2% of their free throw attempts.
Mel McLean added 11 points, five assists, four steals and 2 rebounds for the Vikings.
"I'm disappointed with this game," said Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "We had some early jitters and we missed too many free throws. I'm hoping for a better effort tomorrow."
The Vikings return to action at the Cage Center on Saturday against Agnes Scott. Game time is 4 p.m.
In the earlier game, Millsaps defeated Agnes Scott, 62-44. Velvet Johnson netted 20 points for the Majors and Shavonne Orr contributed 14 for the Scotties.
