Plattsburgh Women Defeat Cortland, 69-61, in SUNYAC Semifinals

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Brittany Marshall totaled 21 points and seven assists as top-seeded Plattsburgh defeated fifth-seeded Cortland, 69-61, in the SUNYAC women's basketball tournament semifinals.

The Cardinals (21-5) will host Geneseo in the championship game 4 p.m. Saturday.

Senior Grace Williamson (Olean) led Cortland (16-11) with 21 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. She made 9-of-15 shots from the floor. Senior Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals and sophomore Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) made 3-of-5 of her 3-pointers and ended with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Also for the Red Dragons, junior Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton) scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and junior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) recorded six points and a team-high five assists.

Marshall was one of three Plattsburgh double-figure scorers. Stephanie Linder made 4-of-8 treys and ended with 14 points, while Kathleen Payne registered 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Devona Paul chipped in with nine points, six rebounds and four steals and Misha Green had eight points and five rebounds.

Cortland led 34-29 with 1:21 left in the first half, but the Cardinals scored the next five points, capped by a Linder jumper with eight seconds left, to force a 34-34 halftime tie.

The game was still knotted at 43-43 after Byrnes made a 3-pointer with 12:37 left. Plattsburgh scored the next eight points on a Linder 3-pointer and a layup and trey by Payne to take a 51-43 lead with 8:57 left and the Cardinals never trailed again.

Cortland fought back to within three after a Williamson jumper and a Touhey 3-point play, but Marshall hit a jumper to cap a 7-3 run that put the hosts up 58-51 with 4:26 remaining. The Red Dragons responded with a 7-2 run, finished by Williamson's 3-point play, and Cortland trailed by only two, 60-58, with 2:25 left.

Green hit a jumper at the two-minute mark to extend the Plattsburgh lead to four. Cortland's next two possessions ended with a missed shot and a turnover, and Marshall sealed the win with four free throws – two with 53 seconds left and two more with 36 ticks remaining.

Cortland shot 42 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range (8-of-22), compared to 39 percent overall and 32 percent (7-of-22) for Plattsburgh. The Cardinals, however, outscored Cortland 16-7 on the foul line and committed 15 turnovers to Cortland's 24.
