Stout drops 86-81 heart breaker to visiting Superior

MENOMONIE (February 25, 2014) - A furious Blue Devil comeback led by Kyleigh Hebert (So, Spencer) fell just short as UW-Superior hit four free throws in the last 20 seconds to seal an 86-81 win at Johnson Fieldhouse Tuesday night. With the loss, Stout was knocked out of the WIAC tournament.

Hebert scored 15 of her team-high 22 points in the game's last ten minutes, leading Stout on an 18-4 run capped off by her three-pointer that gave the Blue Devils a 71-70 lead with 4:36 left in the contest.

Up until that point, Stout (11-15, 7-10 WIAC) had trailed for the entire game, falling behind by as many as 17 in the second half.

In an exciting down-to-the-wire finish, the final five minutes featured four lead changes and five ties. Superior (15-11, 8-9 WIAC) would tie the game on a free throw and retake the lead with a layup before another basket by Hebert knotted the game back up, 73-73.

Another Superior free throw gave the lead back to the Yellowjackets. On the Blue Devil's ensuing possesion, a foul sent Tara Matter (Fr, Spencer) to the line, where she hit both shots to put Stout back on top, 75-74.

The Yellowjackets came right back though, hitting a jumper to go up 76-75. After another foul, Hebert hit 1-2 from the line to tie things at 76 with 2:17 remaining.

A Superior three-pointer rendered the Blue Devil fans silent, putting the Yellowjackets back up, 79-76 with 2:02 to go. But Hebert wasnt done yet, as she calmly nailed her next shot from downtown for a 79-79 score with 1:42 left.

Superior's Sally Linzmeier, who had a game-high 32 points, would put the Yellowjackets up for good, hitting a layup while drawing the foul with 23 seconds to go. She made good on the and-one opportunity and Superior went up 82-79.

A jumper by Hebert cut the lead back to one, 82-81 with 18 seconds left,  but that would be as close as Stout would get. Superior would hit 4-4 from the charity stripe to seal the victory.

The Blue Devils fell behind early and found themselves trailing 14-7 at the 12:24 mark in the first. A quick 5-0 swing drew Stout within two, but the Yellowjackets answerd with a 21-7 stretch, going up 35-19 with a little less than five minutes before the break.

Stout outscored the Yellowjackets 15-13 the rest of the first, but still went into the half trailing by double digits, 48-34.

The Yellowjackets would push their lead to 17 at the 18:22 mark in the second before the Blue Devils made their big push.

For Stout, Folkers added 15 points, four assists, and six steals while Matter recorded her third straight double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

Caitlin Coombs (Jr, Alma) and Haley Froehlich (Jr, Mondovi) provided a spark off the bench for the Blue Devils, scoring seven points apiece while Coombs added six rebounds. In addition to her 22 points, Hebert had five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
