Messick Leads Oxy Past Pomona-Pitzer in Last Game

CLAREMONT — The Occidental College women's basketball jumped ahead and stayed ahead as six seniors played their last games in a Tigers uniform.

Led by senior All-SCIAC center Elizabeth Messick — who scored 15 points and blocked nine shots — the Tigers cruised past Pomona-Pitzer in their season finale, 71-58 at Voelkel Gymnasium on Saturday.

"I'm really going to miss my teammates because I've loved my time at Oxy so much," said Messick, who's been in the top five in the SCIAC in rebounding and blocked shots in each of the last three years. "The season didn't quite end up the way we wanted it to, but when I look back years from now I'll always cherish the last four years of memories."

Brittni WalkerCrystal GoodwinAlyssa MortKristen Treat and Michelle Naito-Lo will also call it a career. Together, the group was a part of two SCIAC championships.

"I couldn't be more proud of our seasons for their effort all season," Oxy head coach Anahit Aladzhanyan said. "They are a special group of people and we wish them the best of luck in the future."

Ashton Reid scored 13 points off of the bench and Walker and Goodwin each added eight.

The Tigers jumped in front 42-23 at halftime and we able to squash any Sagehen momentum in the second half.

Jenn Okonkwo led Pomona-Pitzer with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Oxy finishes the season 13-12 overall and 7-9 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer calls it a year at 8-16 and 6-10 in SCIAC.
