Second-Half Run Lifts Trinity Past Women's Basketball

Trinity utilized a 10-0 second-half run and turned a close contest into a 65-50 victory over Middlebury at Oosting Gymnasium Friday evening. The visiting Panthers (7-16, 1-8) conclude their season Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. game at Amherst.

In the first half, Middlebury scored seven of the game's first nine points including a three-pointer and a lay-up from Sarah Marcus. The Panthers kept Trinity (15-8, 7-3) at bay and possessed a four-point edge at 11-7 with 15:20 left on a lay-up by Rachel Crews on an assist from Scarlett Kirk. The Bantams responded with an 11-1 run over the next 4:28 and grabbed an 18-12 edge on a jumper from Christina Raiti. A pair of free throws and a lay-up from Middlebury's Alexis Coolidge cut the Trinity lead to a pair at 18-16.

The Bantams answered with nine of the next 12 points over the next four minutes and led, 27-19. Not done yet, Middlebury rattled off a 6-0 run and cut the deficit to two at 27-25 with 2:30 left capped off by a jumper from Laura Lowry. The Bantams recorded the final eight points of the half and took a 35-25 lead into the halftime break.

Out of the locker room, Trinity maintained its double-digit advantage and led 42-32 with 17:21 left on a lay-up from Shantel Hanniford. Middlebury responded with a 6-0 spurt covering 2:20 of action and pulled to within four at 42-38 on a lay-up by Elizabeth Knox. However, the Bantams tallied the decisive 10-0 run over the ensuing 2:13 and never looked back in the conference victory.

Individually, Marcus led Middlebury with 10 points, while Crews and Lowry both added nine. Trinity was led by Hannah Brickley with a 20-point, 13-rebound effort, while Hanniford chipped in with seven points and 10 boards. As a team, Trinity held a 48-33 rebounding advantage.
