Drakeley Huge As Vassar Women Knock Off Skidmore 73-67 In Overtime

                  POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 14, 2014) – Sophomore guard Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) nailed a three-pointer to send the game to overtime, and scored five points in the extra session to lift Vassar College to a 73-67 win over Skidmore College in Liberty League women's basketball action.

                  The Brewers (17-4, 10-2 LL) led by 15 points at halftime, and held as much as a 17-point lead three times through the early part of the second stanza. The Thoroughbreds (9-13, 4-9 LL) slowly battled back into the contest, holding Vassar to only three field goals during a 20-6 run that saw Skidmore knot the game at 50.

                  Skidmore took its first lead since 2-0 with 4:09 to play in regulation, but Drakeley hit a jumper to retake the Brewer lead at 54-53. With Vassar up 56-55 with just over a minute to play, the Thoroughbred's Ella Scheuerell nailed a triple to push Skidmore back in front. The Brewers went without points on their next possession and were forced to foul. Jordyn Wartts made one of two to put the visitors ahead 59-56 with 17 seconds on the clock.

                  After a timeout, senior guard Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy) drew three defenders, and dished to Drakeley on the right wing. Drakeley squared up and drilled the triple to deadlock the game at 59, sending the game to overtime after a three-pointer by SC's Amber Holgate missed everything at the buzzer.

                  In the extra session, Drakeley opened the period with a jumper, but Skidmore scored four straight to take a two-point advantage at 63-61. Junior guard Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) knotted the game at 63, and Matsuoka drilled a triple to with 1:18 on the clock to give put VC ahead for good. The Brewers ended the overtime session on a 10-4 to pull away for their 10th conference win of the season.

                  The win coupled with a loss by St. Lawrence University pushed Vassar College into first place in the conference. Drakeley finished with a game-high of 21 points, making eight of her 19 field goals on the night. She also posted a team-best 13 rebounds, chalking up her sixth double-double of the year and second in a row.

                  Matsuoka had an off-night shooting, but still posted 19 points, eight assists, six rebounds and just one turnover in 43 minutes of action. Senior Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington) made both of her three-pointers, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine caroms.

                  Sophomore forward Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area) had five points, eight boards and four blocks for Vassar, which fired 33.7 percent (28-33) from the floor, making a scorching 52.9 percent (9-17) from downtown. The Brewers were out-rebounded for just fifth time this season, as the Thoroughbreds won the rebounding tally, 57-49.

                  Skidmore got a big double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds from Angela Botiba, blocking three shots as well for the visitors. Wartts added 13 points and eight boards, and Scheuerell finished with eight points and 11 rebounds. Lindsey Davis added nine points, and Holgate chalked up eight points. After shooting a dreadful 17.6 percent in the first half, Skidmore rallied to make 24 of its 72 (33.3 percent) from the floor.

                  The Brewers will entertain the Dutchwomen of Union College (14-7, 6-6 LL) tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the AFC for Senior Day. Vassar College seniors Matsuoka, Senftleber and Jarae Farrell (Piscataway, NJ/Timothy Christian) will each be honored prior to the game.
