Mustangs Stalled by Suffolk Defense, Long-Range Shooting

NEWTON, Mass. – The Suffolk Rams held Mount Ida to 17 points in each half and defeated the Mustangs 67-34 on Thursday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball at Mount Ida Athletic Center.

The Rams hit seven of fourteen attempts from behind the three-point line, including 5-8 in the first half, and out-rebounded the Mustangs 51-24, as all 14 players that took the court for Suffolk collected at least one rebound.

A pair of seniors from Connecticut led their teams in scoring, as Mount Ida's Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Suffolk's Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) netted 13 points apiece.

Suffolk took a 21-13 lead in the first half, then held the Mustangs scoreless for over nine minutes while opening their lead to 40-13 before Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) and Jen Rafuse (Brockton, Mass.) made layups to send the teams to the locker room with the Rams ahead by 23.

Shelby Santini (Winchester, Mass.), Kelsey Schiebel (Windham, N.H.) and Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) each were 2-3 from downtown for the visitors, and all three of them scored in double-figures, with Santini contributing 12 points and Bourikas and Schiebel adding ten apiece.

Schiebel also dished out a game-high six assists, while Mount Ida freshman Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) had three assists and ten points, hitting her first three jumpers from the field.

Suffolk took the lead for good at the 15:51 mark of the first half when Ruys hit a jump shot, and they extended it to six points on a triple by Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.), who also had three assists.

The Rams took a double-digit lead when Santini and Schieble made three-pointers on either side of a Fedigan jump shot with 10:12 to play, which were the last points that the Mustangs would score until the final minute of the first half. Along the way, Suffolk added 19 points to their lead, capping their run by two more triples, from Bourikas and Santini.

Fedigan added two blocks and two assists for Mount Ida and Rafuse grabbed six rebounds, to go with four points, two helpers and a rejection.

Bourikas and Tori Brillaud (North Andover, Mass.) led the Rams with nine rebounds apiece.

Mount Ida will head to New Haven, Connecticut this weekend for a 1:00 PM game against GNAC foe Albertus Magnus, the first half of a double-header with the men's teams.

Suffolk will be in Providence Saturday to face Johnson & Wales at 3:00 PM.
