More news about: Lakeland

Leah Eisner (Sr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) scored 20 points and the Lakeland College women's basketball team finished the game on a 13-0 run to outlast Finlandia (Mich.) University 71-61 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game.

Bailey Grayvold (Fr.-Norway, Mich.) also scored 14 points in a return to her home state and Vashia Gordon (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) added 10 points as the Muskies won their final non-conference game of the season. Lakeland improved to 5-6 overall, while the Lions dropped to 3-9 this year.

The deeper Muskies held off a Finlandia team that essentially played just six players, but proved to be a tough out with its three-pointer-heavy attack. The Lions rebounded from a double-digit first half deficit to take a halftime lead, and then came back again when it appeared Lakeland had seized control midway through the second half.

Finlandia trailed 58-47 after Eisner hit a three-pointer with 8:38 left in the game to cap a 21-7 run by the Muskies. The Lions responded with 12 straight points, though, taking a 59-58 lead on a layup by Brierra Ruska with 5:02 left.

The teams alternated baskets, with Finlandia going ahead again on two free throws by Mikayla Hakala making it 61-60. Lakeland took the lead for good, though, when Trista Barron (So.-Escanaba, Mich.) hit a three-pointer with 4:13 to play for a 63-61 lead, and the Muskies held the Lions scoreless the rest of the way.

Finlandia led 37-35 at halftime, rebounding after Lakeland led much of the first half. The Muskies were ahead 31-20 after a three-pointer by Grayvold with 6:29 left in the half, but the Lions used a 15-2 run late to take the lead.

Lakeland shot 28 of 63 (44.4%) from the field, including 5 of 24 from three-point range. The Muskies also were outrebounded 41-37, but took advantage of 26 Finlandia turnovers.

Ruska and Marissa Burke led four Lion players in double figures with 14 points each. Finlandia shot 20 of 58 from the field (34.4%), including 11 of 40 from three-point range (27.5%).

The Muskies open the new year at home on Saturday against Aurora (Ill.) University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at 4:15 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
