Eagles Hold On Late; Down Mariners

CASTINE, Maine -- Husson withstood a late Maine Maritime rally to knock off the Mariners 53-49 in a North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game Tuesday. The Eagles improved to 10-9, 9-3 NAC, while Maine Maritime dropped to 11-8, 8-4.

Bekah Campbell and Cheyenne Malloy each netted 11 points to lead the Mariners. Leah Jackson posted a game-high 10 rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists, along with teammate Hannah Lyons.

Chandler Guerette led Husson with a game-high 19 points, Victoria McIntyre added 13 and Samira Cruz 12. McIntyre also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

The Eagles took an early 5-0 lead on a Denae Johnson jumper four minutes into the game. A jay from Kari Jones and three by Kristi Willey evened the game at 9-9 two minutes later. Husson responded with an 11-2 run, led by six points by Guerette and Cruz to take a 20-11 advantage with 9:34 left in the opener.

A Cruz jumper at four minutes put the Eagles ahead 23-16. Maine Maritime, behind three treys by Malloy, finished the half on a 9-3 run to make it 26-25 at halftime.

Jillian Perron opened the second half with layup to put the Mariners ahead 27-26. Maine Maritime took its final lead when Kari Jones connected from long distance to give MMA a 30-29 lead with 17:26 left in the game. Husson took its largest lead, 41-32, on a Guerette free throw with 11:42 on the clock.

The Mariners answered with a 9-0 run to even the game at 41-41 with 9:25 left in the game. Malloy, Lyons, Ashley Shine each had a basket and Willey hit a three in the run for Maine Maritime. The Eagles answered with a 7-0 run and took a 48-41 lead on Katy Brochu's layup with 5:53 left in the game. 

Consecutive Jackson to Campbell layups put the Mariners within one, 50-49, with 2:30 left in the game. Guerette made it 52-49 with a jumper at 1:36 before the Mariners missed two shots from behind the arc in the final 18 seconds.

Maine Maritime returns to action Friday, 5:30 p.m., at Colby-Sawyer.
