Tufts Takes Down Anchorwomen, 63-42

Providence, R.I.-Senior forward Cara Paladino (Arlington, MA) finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore forward Vandell Andrade (Providence, RI) added seven points, 13 rebounds and two steals, as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team fell to No. 6 Tufts University, 63-42, at The Murray Center on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

 

Junior guard Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) paced Tufts with 14 points, including 11 first half, to go along with a team-high seven rebounds and a game-high four steals. The Jumbos improve to a perfect 19-0 on the season, while Rhode Island College slips to 14-6 overall.

 

Despite the loss, the Anchorwomen still own an 8-2 record since the calendar turned to 2014 and own a 2-2 record against opponents from the NESCAC, one of the top conferences in New England.

 

The Jumbos jumped ahead of RIC, 9-2, at the 13:40 mark following a trey from Foley and never looked back, as the visitors forced the Anchorwomen into 14 first-half turnovers and held the hosts to a 28 percent (5-for-18) shooting clip from the floor en route to the, 31-17, halftime lead. Tufts, meanwhile, shot 45 percent (13-for-29) from the field through the first 20 minutes and dished out 10 assists as a team, compared to just one dime for RIC.

 

The Jumbos continued to pull away from the hosts in the second half, as Tufts shot 42 percent (10-for-24) from the floor and outscored RIC, 32-25, through the final frame to seal the 21-point victory. 

 

Aside from Foley's standout performance, junior center Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) starred for the Jumbos with 12 points, five rebounds and three blocks, while junior guard Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) chipped in with 11 points, a game-high seven assists and a pair of steals. Freshman center Michela North (Duxbury, MA) finished with nine points and two rebounds off the bench to help the Jumbos, while sophomore guard Emma Roberson (Arlington, MA) added six points, two assists and two rebounds.

 

Freshman forward Christian McDuffy (Brockton, MA) posted six points and four rebounds for RIC, while sophomore guard Danielle LeBlanc (Warwick, RI) netted seven points, added two steals and hauled in two rebounds. Senior guard Stephanie Prusko (Lincoln, RI) registered five points and four boards.

 

For the game, the Jumbos shot 43 percent (23-for-53) from the field, 46 percent (6-for-13) from downtown and 69 percent (11-for-16) from the free throw line.

 

The Anchorwomen shot just 30 percent (13-for-44) from the floor and 70 percent (16-for-23) from the free throw line, while going 0-for-8 from outside.

 

In total, Tufts dished out 17 assists, compared to just six assists for RIC, and committed just 13 turnovers, while forcing the Anchorwomen into a whopping 22 turnovers.

 

The Anchorwomen managed to outrebound the Jumbos, 39-29, and hauled in 15 offensive rebounds as a team in the loss.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at home against Keene State on Saturday, Feb. 8 (1 p.m.).
