Second Half Slum Hurts Hawks

More news about: Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. -  Kylie Reinholz and Natalie Whitman combined for half of Hilbert's points and rebounds in the Hawks 86-62 loss the Penn State Altoona today in women's basketball.  Whitman added another double double to her credit and Reinholz fell short by two boards to claim that feat.

Altoona had five players reach for double figures led by Courtney Becker (20 points/10 rebounds) and Moira Corrigan (12 points/11 rebounds).

Whitman scored 16 points and added 14 rebounds.  She sank 5 of 9 from the floor and went 6 for 10 from the charity stripe.  Kylie Reinholz reached 15 points and battled for eight rebounds, as did Kateland Ball who had a strong game with three assists and five points.

Emily Speidel added 10 points hitting 50% of her shots from beyond the arc.

Speidel crashed the score board just 10-seconds after the tip and by 17:30, Kylie Reinholz's back-to-back baskets gave Hilbert their largest lead in the game.  Altoona went on a 20-4 run over the next seven minutes building a 10-point spread.

Haley Oakes started Hilbert's come-back with a banked three just before Reinholz connected twice in a row.  Natalie Whitman continued the Hawk run  with two scores from the charity stripe just before Speidel was credited with two blocks on two different Altoona possessions.  Whitman set up Samantha Anderson for a traditional three-point-play which she earned in a break-away layup to cut the score to 33-29.  Altoona scored four straight points before the Hawks went on a 6-0 run to close the half with a force.  Whitman andJaelyn Gotham connected in the paint and Reinholz pushed the ball for a transition layup.

Hilbert outshot the Lions in the first 20-minutes (43.8% vs 32.5%) but were outrebounded by 4 and gave up 14 offensive boards.

Kateland Ball's jumper forced the game's first tie on the Hawks first possession after the break.  In back and forth play with two more tie scores, Hilbert appeared to be on track to take over.  But the Lions slowly pulled away and grabbed a double-digit lead with 11:58 remaining.  The Hawks struggled to convert on offense and didn't get stops on defense the last second half of the game.

Altoona almost doubled Hilbert's field goal percentage sinking 10 more shots than the Hawks even though their shot attempts were similar in number in the second half.  The Hawks gave up 49-second half points and finished with 23 assists to improve to 5-8 in AMCC.

Hilbert (3-16, 2-11 overall) travels to Cazenovia College this week for their last non-conference game Tuesday, February 4.  The women's game will start at 5 pm.
