Anderson's Double-Double Leads R-MC Past W&L

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds as Randolph-Macon outscored Washington & Lee 96-76 Thursday evening in ODAC women's basketball action at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

Anderson was one of five players to score in double figures for the Yellow jackets (12-4, 5-2 ODAC). She was 10 for 16 from the floor and a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

The Generals (3-11, 1-6 ODAC) scored the first basket of the game for their only lead. The Yellow Jackets used a 16-6 run to take a 16-8 advantage just over five minutes into the contest. Anderson had seven points in the spurt for R-MC. The Yellow Jackets eventually pushed the lead to 15 at 36-21 with eight minutes left in the period. R-MC was up 44-29 with five minutes remaining in the half before a 13-1 run by W&L narrowed the margin to three at 45-42 with 1:30 left. Sophomore Lauren Vugteveen (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) scored the final three points of the half to give the Yellow Jackets a 50-43 advantage at intermission. Anderson posted 17 points and six rebounds in the first period.

Randolph-Macon used a 12-6 spurt at the start of the second half to take a 62-49 lead with 15:30 remaining in the contest. The Generals scored seven straight points to pull within six at 62-56 with 12:25 to go. The Yellow Jackets led 67-61 midway through the second stanza before a 22-11 run over the next five minutes pushed the advantage to 89-72. Anderson again had seven points in the flurry. The final margin of 20 was the largest of the game.

Vugteveen finished with 17 points, while senior Lindsey Sharman (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) added 15, junior Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) chipped in 12 and junior Taylor Huber (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) put up 10.

W&L finished with six players in double figures, led by Samantha Sharman and Katie Wildes with 14 each.

The Yellow Jackets held a 51-29 advantage on the boards. The R-MC defense forced 22 W&L turnovers and held the visitors to 1 for 8 shooting from behind the arc.

R-MC travels to Roanoke on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a 1:00 p.m. ODAC contest.
