Royals Sneak Past Hot-Shooting Hollins Team

More news about: Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, VA --- Good teams find ways to win.  The EMU basketball women followed that mantra Saturday afternoon, fighting past a scrappy Hollins team in Yoder Arena, 70-60.  Despite leading much of the game, the Royals trailed with 9:03 to play, before taking over down the stretch.

Eastern Mennonite led by as many as nine points in the first half, but watched as Hollins chipped back in and eventually tied the game at 28-28.  The Royals got a layup before halftime to hold a 30-28 edge at the break.

The women couldn't string together a run early in the second, and Hollins hung around.  The visitors finally used a 10-3 streak to grab a 48-46 lead with 9:03 left.

EMU turned on the defense and held their guests scoreless for the next 3:19.  Alisa Brown (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) and Bianca Ygarza (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) scored all the points during a 9-0 run, which pushed the women back in front, 55-48.  Brown landed the knockout punch by turning a steal into a three-point play, inflating the edge to 67-55 with 1:49 on the clock.  Hollins would get no closer than seven points before the final buzzer.

Despite struggling from outside, hitting just 5-of-28 three pointers, EMU out-shot Hollins 43% to 41%.  Hollins made 9-of-17 triple attempts.  The Royals only committed eight turnovers while forcing 16.

Brown dumped in a career high 19 points to go with three steals.  Shakeerah Sykes (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) was 8-11 from the floor and just missed a double double with 16 points and nine rebounds.  Ygarza added nine points, while Steph Rheinheimer (Manheim, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) came in with eight.

Taylor Catron and Jewell Parfitt combined for six three pointers as they co-led Hollins with 14 apiece.

The Royals improve to 11-4 with the win, including 5-1 in the ODAC.  The women now enter a tough three-game stretch, starting with a road game at rival Bridgewater College on Wednesday night.  Following that EMU hosts conference powerhouses Guilford and Randolph-Macon.
