NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team played its most complete first half of the season and had the game tied at 55-55 with 2:53 remaining, but visiting SUNY Plattsburgh pulled away thanks to converting seven late free throws, to defeat the Hawks 67-60 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Friday evening at the Hawk Center.

New Paltz held a 54-51 lead with 4:03 remaining, but the Cardinals rallied with timely field goals and effective free throw shooting. The biggest blow came with 1:49 to play junior guard Brittany Marshall drained a three-pointer from the right hash mark to put the visitors up by five, 62-57. Even though freshman forward Kit Small(Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Name)  connected on a old-fashioned three-point play with 42 seconds to play to bring New Paltz within 62-60, the Hawks were forced to put Plattsburgh on the line six times in the final 33 seconds and the Cardinals converted on five of six attempts to seal the victory.

The loss drops New Paltz to 2-11, 0-6, while Plattsburgh improves to 9-3, 4-1. The Hawks remain at home hosting SUNY Potsdam on Saturday at 2 p.m., while Plattsburgh heads to SUNY Oneonta for a 2 p.m. game.

Friday night's contest was New Paltz's finest game in SUNYAC play this season. The Hawks took a 32-30 lead into halftime, adeptly handling Plattsburgh's full court defense and converting on offense with seven second chance points, 11 points off turnovers (the Hawks caused 13 Plattsburgh miscues) and tallying 14 points in the paint. Most impressively, the Hawks played toe-to-toe with the Cardinals despite losing senior forward Jeannette Scott (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) to foul trouble for the final 10:19 to play.

Junior guard Ashley Riefenhauser (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) and freshman forward Courtney Irby(Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) combined for 17 of the hosts 32 first half points, with Irby going 4-for-8 from the floor and Riefenhauser netting a pair of three-pointers. Down 23-17 with 8:16 until intermission, the Hawks went on a 15-7 run to close out the half, shooting both 50 percent from the field and from long distance.

Plattsburgh started the first 7:58 of the second half on a 12-4 run to take a 42-36 lead before a Riefenhauser three-pointer stemmed the tide. Two free throws from Small put the Hawks up 45-42 before a Marshall three-pointer knotted the contest. Small's free throw prowess (8-for-9) kept the Hawks within striking distance and a single free throw from junior guard Shannan Walker (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) with 2:53 to play tied the game for the ninth and final time at 55-55. Plattsburgh nailed home a jumper courtesy of junior guard Misha Green and got two free throws from sophomore guard Stephanie Linder before Marshall knocked home her big three-pointer with 1:49 to play to supply the much needed edge.

Solid free throw shooting (15-for-19, 79 percent), along with an 11-5 advantage in second chance points, kept the Hawks in the game. The New Paltz bench outscored Plattsburgh 27-9 thanks to Small's 16- point effort. She led the Hawks with seven rebounds. Irby had 14 points and six rebounds and Reinfenhauser finished with 11 points.

Marshall led Plattsburgh in scoring with 19 points on a torrid 7-for-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point distance. Senior guard Kathleen Payne had 16 points and was tough to contain off the backboard with a game-high 15 rebounds.
