The New York University women's basketball team made its 2013-14 road University Athletic Association (UAA) debut in dramatic fashion on Friday night, January 17. The Violets topped the University of Chicago 89-87 at the Ratner Center in Chicago, coming back from 17 points down to record the win.

"We didn't play particularly well in the first half, but we were still in the game," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "So I told them we've just got to play a little better to come out on top. The great thing about this group is that they don't give up. They're a young team and they've made up their minds that they can win games."

NYU (13-0, 2-0 UAA) was led by sophomore co-captain forward Megan Dawe. The reigning UAA Rookie of the Year dropped in a career-high 29 points in addition to nine rebounds, scoring 18 of those in the second half to lead the Violets all the way back. Moreover, Dawe struggled from the line in the first half going 3-of-6, but came back in the second to shoot 10-of-11 from the charity stripe.

"The thing that Megan has always had that makes her a tremendous player is that she plays the game with a lot of grace and composure," said Hall-Gregory. "She doesn't get rattled and she has an ability to take over the game both offensively and defensively because she's such an athletic post player. She does it in a quiet way, but she shows that when we need a moment or a play from someone, she's ready to step up."

Chicago (6-7, 0-2 UAA) led by 12 entering the second half, but NYU instantly went on a 19-8 run to bring it to just a one-point game. Overall, the Violets outscored the Maroons 46-32 in the second half.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Freshman guard Kaitlyn Read had her second 20-point performance of the season, finishing with 20 and adding six rebounds.

- Sophomore guard Riley Wurtz chipped in 13 points, also registered seven steals, six assists and six rebounds.

- Freshman guard Amy Harioka rounded out the Violets' double-figure scorers with 10 points and five steals.

NYU will be back on the court on Sunday afternoon, January 19, when it travels to St. Louis. The Violets are scheduled to tip-off with #2 Washington Universrity-St. Louis at 2:00 pm central time.

"We're just planning on going down there to compete," said Hall-Gregory. "We're really excited for the opportunity; WashU is a heck of a team, but I think we're ready for this."
