Late Second Half Run Lifts Cyclones Past Giants

Hackettstown, NJ – Tied 51-51 with 8:12 remaining in regulation, Centenary College used a 10-0 run to pull away with an 81-61 victory over Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Centenary's John Reeves Center.  The Cyclones snapped a six-game losing skid to improve to 5-9 overall on the season while leveling their conference record at 3-3.  The Giants, who suffered their third-straight defeat, drop to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.    
 
Keystone scored the first five points of Wednesday night's game before Centenary used a 15-6 run to build a four point lead at the 14:46 mark.  The Giants responded with 9-1 spurt to claim a 22-16 advantage with 10:15 remaining after Samantha Donahue (Taylor, PA/Riverside) hit a jumper.  The Cyclones countered and went up 30-25 with five minutes left on the clock and after Alyssa Cuomo (Odessa, DE/Hodgson Vo-tech) made it a three-point game with a jumper at the 3:46 mark, Centenary would score the final seven points of the half to take a 37-27 lead into the intermission.
 
Mallory George and Ally Fugnitti scored 11 points apiece in the first half to lead Centenary while Jessie Sharr pulled down seven rebounds as the Cyclones held a 25-16 advantage on the glass in the opening 20 minutes of play.  The hosts shot 40 percent from the field in the period while going 4-12 from three-point range and 5-12 from the free throw line.
 
Cuomo led Keystone's offense in the opening 20 minutes of play with eight points while Donahue netted five points in the period.  Jazmyn Robinson (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern) added team-highs of four rebounds and three assists for the Giants, who connected on 42.9 percent of their field goal attempts while going just 1-8 from beyond the arc and 2-4 from the foul line.
 
Keystone used an 11-2 spurt early in the second half to cut their deficit to 43-42 with 14:29 remaining in regulation on a layup by Chantel Blake (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) before Ashley Evans (Wooster, OH/Wooster) hit a pair of free throws at the 12:10 mark to put the Giants back in front.  Back-to-back layups by Robinson extended the visitor's lead to 50-45 with 11:47 remaining before Centenary used a three-pointer followed by a three-point play to go back in front, 51-50 midway through the period.  After Robinson hit the backend of a pair of free throws to tie the score with 8:12 remaining, the Cyclones used a 10-0 run to build a 61-51 advantage with 4:17 left on the clock.
 
A field goal from Robinson brought Keystone back within eight points with just under four minutes remaining, but it was as close as the Giants would come down the stretch as Centenary outscored the visitors 20-8 over the final 3:44.
 
George finished with a game-high 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds to lead Centenary on the night while Fugnitti finished the contest with 15 points.  Sharr added 14 points and 11 boards while Melissa Rabe chipped in 11 points for the Cyclones.  Klarissa Perry was the third Centenary player to finish with 11 boards as the hosts held a 54-42 advantage in rebounds on the night.  For the game, the Cyclones hit on 38.7 percent of their field goal attempts including a 31.3 percent effort from downtown and a 62.2 percent effort from the free throw line.
 
Robinson led Keystone with 16 points to go along with nine rebounds, five assists, and five steals.  Cuomo added 14 points while Evans tallied 13 points and seven rebounds.  Jerica Rode (Lords Valley, PA/Wallenpaupack) also collected seven rebounds in the loss for the Giants, who shot 34.8 percent from the field while struggling from long distance as the visitors hit on just three of 20 attempts from beyond the arc.  Keystone was also 10-19 from the free throw line on the evening.
 
The Giants will next host Cabrini College on Saturday afternoon in a CSAC matchup slated to tipoff at 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume.
