Women’s Basketball rally falls short to Lehman, 66-61

NEW YORK --- The City College of New York women's basketball team lost 66-61 to visiting Lehman College on Saturday afternoon at the Nat Holman Gymnasium. The Beavers of CCNY fall to 4-8 and 3-4 in the CUNYAC standings while the Lightning of Lehman improve to 10-5 and 4-2 against conference opponents.

Amely Del Rosario led the Lightning with 25 points, seven steals and dishing out five assists, converting on 50 percent of her shots. Shalaya Nieves had 13 points, a game-high 16 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Amani Lightbourne came up with 12 points and five rebounds, while Genesis Liberato added ten and six.

Syreeta Williams led CCNY with 20 points and 14 rebounds, making all six of her free throws. Karissa Core finished with 12 points while pulling down six rebounds and collecting two assists. Bria Fisher contributed eight points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Marissa Olsen came off the bench to score eight with four boards. Latoya Lee added five points and six rebounds.

After falling behind 6-0 to open the game, the Lightning brought their up-tempo style into play scoring 24 consecutive points. Lehman shot 43 percent from the floor in the first half, going in the break with a 37-29 lead.  Del Rosario sparked the visitors with 16 points, four steals and three assists all before the halftime buzzer sounded.

Down early in the second, the Beavers used tough defense and free throw shooting to work their way back in it. Staring at a 48-31 deficit with 16:12 remaining in the game, CCNY outscored Lehman 19-4 to pull to within two on a three-pointer by Core with 5:12 left. With 2:46 remaining, City tied the game when Williams completed a three-point play, knotting it at 57-57. Less than a minute later, Williams put the Beavers ahead on two free throws, giving the home team their first lead since the opening minutes. Lehman would answer, however, when Liberato hit a huge three-pointer to retake the lead, 60-59.

Down three with eight seconds remaining, Williams scored on a tip-in to pull to within one. With two fouls to give, the Beavers were forced to call a timeout with none remaining, leading to a technical. Lehman's Jennifer Navarro hit four big free throws down the stretch, and the Lightning escaped with the win.
