Blanco, Core help CCNY Women’s Basketball squeeze past York

JAMAICA, NY --- Giovanna Blanco scored 21 points on ten of 13 shots and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the City College of New York women's basketball team over host York College, 52-51, on Tuesday evening. The Beavers of CCNY improve to 4-6 and 3-3 while the Cardinals of York dip to 1-9 and 0-4.

Blanco's dominating performance included four blocks and two steals. Karissa Core also came up huge, finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists. Marissa Olsen came off the bench to put up seven points with five rebounds, while Bria Fisher finished with five points and five steals.

For the Cardinals, Shauncia McClendon led York with 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.  Angelika Ruggiano also had 13 points, making all three of her three-point attempts. Danielle Dunn finished with six points and a game-high nine boards.

CCNY took a 30-27 halftime lead in a very tight first half, led by Blanco and Core. York took control at the start of the second half, going on a 12-2 to go up by seven. With her team reeling, Head Coach Jackee Meadow's squad rallied, scoring ten straight points to retake the lead, capped off by a layup from Blanco with 12:14 remaining in the game, 42-39. The Beavers would not surrender the lead again.

York had the ball down one at 52-51 with 58 seconds left, then again with 27 ticks remaining and lastly with 8 seconds, but the City defense held, forcing missed shots and securing the defensive rebounds.

Just ten games into their 2013-14 season, the Beavers have already equaled their win total from last season with four.

CCNY is back in action when they travel to Rivier College on Thursday for a 5:00 p.m. game. The Beavers will resume their CUNYAC schedule on Saturday when they host Lehman College at 2:00 p.m.
