Brooklyn Survives Late Old Westbury Rally; Edge Panthers 78-76

Old Westbury, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team avoided a second half comeback attempt from the Panthers of the SUNY College at Old Westbury, as the Bulldogs held off the home team by a score of 78-76 at the Clark Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

With the win, BC improves to 5-3 overall on the year; while Old Westbury drops to 2-5 overall on the season.

The Bulldogs never trailed in the first half as the Panthers would only be able to tie the game on five occasions. After a pair of free throws from Old Westbury's Clarissa Gallagher tied the game at 11-11 with 14:30 left before halftime, Brooklyn went on an 8-0 run powered by three-pointers from freshman Tiffany Ruiz and junior Carissa Williams to go ahead 19-11 at the 9:43 mark of the period. BC would go on to take a 13-point, 39-26, halftime lead after shooting 40.5% (15-37) from the field and 54.5% (6-11) from three.

Following a free throw from junior Nicole Francomano that gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game, 42-27, with 18:11 left on the clock, the Panthers would begin to chip away at their deficit and eventually take their first lead of the game. A key 23-7 run by Old Westbury put the Panthers back into the game, giving the home team a one-point lead, 50-49, with 10:19 left on the clock. The final 10 minutes of the game would see three ties and four lead changes as the teams exchanged runs down the stretch.

In the end, Brooklyn would escape with a two-point victory, 78-76, by hitting key free throws in the closing minutes. The Panthers would have a chance to win the game in the final possession; however, a potentional game-winning three-point attempt came up short, giving BC the win.

For BC, senior Megan Campbell registered her third straight double-double with another 23 point and 11 rebound performance, while junior Nacirema Mann added 12 points and seven rebounds coming off the bench. Williams finished with 11 points, while Francomano dished out 10 assists, to go along with nine points. Junior Asia Forster grabbed 11 rebounds as Brooklyn out-rebounded Old Westbury 51-31, including 21-13 in offensive rebounds, which led to 22 second chance points for the Bulldogs.

For Old Westbury, DeAndra Scott recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Raven Pentz added 16 points. Gallagher finished with 15 points, while Jasmine Robinson chipped in with 12 points and five assists.

BC shot 37.1% (26-70) from the field and 40.0% (6-15) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also shot 66.7% (20-30) from the free throw line.

Old Westbury shot 41.1% (23-56) from the field and 40.0% (8-20) from three. The Panthers struggled from the line going 22-for-39 (56.4%).

Brooklyn will be back in action this Friday, December 13th, as the Bulldogs will play host to borough and conference foe Medgar Evers College. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start at the West Quad Center.
