Stormy Petrels Blow Out Covenant, 62-35

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team picked up where it left off on Thursday night, routing Covenant, 62-35, in Lookout Mountain, Ga., Saturday afternoon. The victory turns around the result from last Tuesday, when Covenant defeated the Stormy Petrels, 65-52, in Dorough Field House.

The afternoon did not start out particularly well for the Stormy Petrels, as Covenant began the game on a 16-4 run over the first nine minutes. However, it was all Petrels from there, as they ended the half on a 22-5 run to take a 26-21 lead into the halftime break.

Neither team shot the ball particualry well in the half, with Oglethorpe shooting 34.5 percent to the home-standing Scots' 29 percent. However, Covenant only made two baskets after their 16-4 start.

In the second half, the Petrels started just like they did in the second half against Berry on Thursday. They completely put the game away with a 27-9 run over the half's first 13:30, giving themselves a 53-29 lead with 6:29 remaining and recalling the 25-3 run to start the second half at Berry which essentially won that game. All in all, the Petrel run bridging halftime came in at 49-13 over 24:30. Though Covenant hit three straight baskets after that, the Petrels went on another run to finish the game, outscoring the Scots 9-0 in the game's final four minutes to cruise home with the victory. In total, the Petrels outscored the Scots 58-19 after falling behind 16-4.

The Petrels held Covenant to just 18.4 percent shooting in the second half, including 0-for-7 from 3-point range. They shot 48.1 percent themselves, including 55.6 percent 3-point shooting, and outrebounded Covenant 25-18 in the period. Meanwhile, freshman guard Ciara Hughes recorded a double-double in the second half alone, scoring 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in the half and grabbing 10 rebounds.

For the game, the Petrels held Covenant to just 23.2 percent shooting and 0-for-15 three-point shooting. Meanwhile, they shot 41.1 percent themselves, marking their second game in a row over 40 percent after failing to reach the mark in each of their previous games. The Petrels dominated Covenant on the glass, 52-39, and accrued 13 assists to the Scots' seven while committing 17 turnovers to the Scots' 14. The Petrels outscored Covenant 16-1 off the bench.

Individually, Hughes totaled 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 15 rebounds, while senior guard Kyana Jenkins enjoyed another stellar game, grabbing 14 rebounds and passing out six assists. Freshman forward McKenzie Fortson enjoyed another excellent game from long distance, making 5-of-8 three-pointers for 15 points. Sophomore guard Emily Buck delivered another steady performance, tallying 16 points and hitting 5-of-7 free throws.

The Petrels improve to 3-5 on the year and will now take a break for final exams before reconvening in two weeks for a weekend trip to North Texas. They'll take on two former SCAC league foes, as they battle Dallas Dec. 20 in Irving at 9 p.m. Eastern before traveling up to Sherman Dec. 21 to take on Austin at 2 p.m. Eastern.
