Blue Devils swat Yellowjackets to open cnference play

MENOMONIE (December 5, 2013) - Brea Boomer (Jr, Grand Portage, Minn.) scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Blue Devils opened thier WIAC schedule with a 66-49 victory over UW-Superior at Johnson Fieldhouse. In a strong defensive team effort, Stout had 12 steals, including four by Katelynne Folkers (Jr, Fall Creek), and pestered the Yellow Jackets into committing 26 turnovers.

Boomer had nine offensive rebounds on the night, as Stout outrebounded Superior, 47-39. Folkers also grabbed six rebounds, two offensive, for Stout.

Superior (2-3, 0-1 WIAC) jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six points of the game before Stout (3-5, 1-0 WIAC) scored the next six to knot up the score. A jumper by Boomer and a layup by Kyleigh Hebert (So, Spencer) with 14:47 would give the Blue Devils their biggest lead of the half, 12-8. Hebert shared team-high scoring honors with Boomer, dropping in 15 on 5-6 shooting from the field. 

After a back-and-forth first half that featured five lead changes and six ties, the Blue Devils went into the half up 34-33. 

The second half would be all Blue Devils, as Stout jumped ahead quickly on an offensive putback by Boomer and a jump shot from Shelby Sterba (Jr, Tony) on the team's first two possesions to go up 38-33. Another jumper by Sterba pushed the lead to seven. 

For the game, Sterba scored 14 on 7-11 shooting in addition to grabbing five rebounds and blocking a pair of shots. 

Superior's Sally Linzmeir, who scored a game-high 16 points before fouling out with eight minutes remaining, then went on a mini-tear, scoring five points around a Folkers free-throw to pull the Yellow Jackets within three, 41-38. 

This would be as close as Superior would get, as Stout went on a 25-11 run over the final 14 minutes to put the game out of reach. 

Hebert scored eight points over the final nine minutes, including going  4-7 from the line in the final 3:20 to help seal the win for the Blue Devils. 

The 49 points allowed by the Blue Devils is the least points given up so far this season. Four players had multiple steals for the Blue Devils, led by Folkers with four. Also intercepting multiple passes were Sami Schoeder with three steals and Boomer and Hebert with two apiece. 

For Superior, Brynn Liljander scored 11 points, going 3-7 from downtown. Linzmeir chipped in six rebounds and four steals for the Yellow Jackets.

Up next, Stout will travel to Whitewater to take on the Warhawks (6-1, 0-0 WIAC) Saturday, Dec. 7 at 3 p.m.
