MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball l team earned their first win of the season in electric fashion on Saturday night as sophomore Rachel Pope willed in a runner with 1.4 seconds remaining in the game. Pope's only basket of the game gave the Eagles a 57-56 victory over Benedictine University and ended Edgewood College's four game skid.

With 2:31 remaining in the game, Benedictine's Briana Hamilton put back an offensive rebound to tie the game for the sixth time. Both teams came up empty on three straight possessions before Courtney Spangler was fouled after snagging an offensive rebound. Spangler missed the first, but knocked down the second to give Edgewood College a one-point advantage. Hamilton was fouled on the ensuing possession and converted down both free throws flipping the lead to Benedictine's side. With 7.4 seconds on the clock, Pope took the inbounds pass and dribbled up the left side of the court. The sophomore was pressured at the three-point line and laid up a shot from about seven feet out. The ball banked hard off the glass and rattled around the rim before falling through with just 1.4 ticks on the clock. Benedictine (1-4, 1-1 NACC) had one more chance, but a shot near half court was nowhere near the mark.

Early in the first half, Edgewood College had a tough time against Benedictine's zone defense and converted just 32 percent of their field goals and 12.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles fought back by hitting four of five three-pointers after the break to turn a nine-point deficit into a nine-point lead with a 24-6 run over a 12 minute span. Benedictine then went on a 14-5 run to tie the game at 54 and set up the dramatic finish.

Pope's game-winning runner was her only field goal of the night, but the most important one at that. The Dodgeville native added six rebounds and five assists to her stat line.Mariah Hill led the Eagles with 17 points in addition to four rebounds. Dareon Henderson and Brooke McBain each pulled down eight rebounds while Spangler added nine points and six boards.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to Mequon to take on Concordia Wisconsin. The NACC match will have live stats available onEdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
