Hot second half propels Stout to win over Marian University

MENOMONIE (November 19, 2013) - Four UW-Stout players finished in double figures as the Blue Devils used a strong second half to defeat Marian University, 89-74, Tuesday in the home opener at Johnson Fieldhouse.

On the strength of seemingly a ton of 3-point shots, seven in the first half, Marian (0-1) stayed even with the Blue Devils and Stout (2-1) took a 40-35 hafltime lead.

The Blue Devils picked up the pace early in the second half jumping out to a 13 points, 48-35 lead four minutes into the last stanza. The Sabres continued to pop 3-pointers, connecting on eight in the second half, but never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Sami Schoeder (Sr, Durand) led Stout with 16 points. Schoeder drained four 3-pointers of her own. Katelynne Folkers (Jr, Fall Creek) had a solid effort. To go with her 15 points, Folkers pulled down six rebounds snared six of Stout's 21 total steals. Shelby Sterba (Jr, Tony) added 14 points and Tara Matter (Fr, Spencer) chipped in10 points. Kyleigh Hebert (So, Spencer) and Brea Boomer (Jr, Grand Portage, Minn) each added nine points.

Stout shot 38.9 (14-36) percent in the first half, then warmed up to 55.9 (19-34) percent in the second half to finish the night at 47.1 (33-70) percent.

The Sabres' Sarah Albert led all scorers with 19 points, making 5-of-11 from beyond the arc. Emma Jarvey had 10 points and eight rebounds. Marian shot 40 percent (20-50) for the game.

Stout will face a pair of Division II teams on the road this week, traveling to Winona State, Thursday, Nov. 21 and at St. Cloud State, Saturday, Nov. 23.
