Cortland Women Defeat Elmira, 68-41, in Home Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Grace Williamson (Olean) led three Cortland double-figure scorers with 16 points as the Red Dragons won their home opener versus Elmira, 68-41. Cortland improved to 2-1 with the victory, while the Soaring Eagles dropped to 1-2.

Williamson was 8-of-9 shooting from the field and shared the team lead with six rebounds. Senior Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists and sophomore Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) added 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Cohen shot 5-of-8 from the field and Touhey was 5-of-9.

Also for the Red Dragons, junior Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton) totaled eight points and four assists and junior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) finished with six rebounds and three steals.

Jessica Zoltowski (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) led Elmira with 10 points and three steals. Alex Balara (Marlton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) scored seven points and Liz Forrest (North Walpole, NH/Fall Mountain) pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

Cortland shot 48 percent from the field, including 50 percent (13-of-26) in the second half. The Red Dragons held the Soaring Eagles to 29 percent shooting. Cortland also outrebounded Elmira, 40-20.

Cortland led 17-8 eight minutes into the game, but Elmira closed to within three points twice, the last at 23-20 on a Forrest layup with 4:47 left in the half. The hosts, however, finished the period on an 8-2 run and held a 31-22 halftime lead.

A 9-2 run to open the second half extended Cortland's lead to 40-24 with 15 minutes remaining. The margin grew to 20 at 50-30 with 10 minutes left and was as high as 30 at 67-37 on a Sarah Seger (Wantagh/L.I. Lutheran) layup with 3:19 remaining.

Cortland will host SUNYIT in a non-league game Thursday at 6 p.m.
